What's in a name? The Story of Nerdy Bird Farm

Updated: Jun 26

When it came to naming our little slice of paradise, the choice was clear: Nerdy Bird Farm. You might wonder what led us to such a unique and whimsical name. The answer lies in who we are as a family and what we've learned from our turkeys. Our family has always been a bit on the nerdy side, and we're proud of it! We are passionate about science fiction, fascinated by the mysteries of the universe, and constantly curious about the world around us. Each member of our family brings their own unique nerdy flair to the table.

A Family of Nerds

Julie – The Book Nerd

I, Julie, am the resident bookworm. Books are my escape and my adventure. I devour novels, especially those that transport me to fantastical worlds full of magic, mystery, and science fiction. My love for literature has always inspired me to seek knowledge by thinking outside the box.

Alan – The Tech Guru

My husband, Alan, is our tech guy. He has an insatiable curiosity for how things work and loves tinkering with gadgets. Whether it's setting up the latest smart home technology or experimenting with new software, Alan's passion for tech keeps our farm running smoothly and with innovation.

Gwyn – The Math and Science Enthusiast

Our daughter, Gwyn, has a natural affinity for math and science. She enjoys figuring out the geometry and dimensions involved with our farm builds and keeps us up to date with the latest science news.

Ethan – The Robotics and Nature Lover

Our son, Ethan, has a unique blend of interests. He loves robotics, nature, and science. Whether he's learning to fly r/c airplanes or drones or exploring the great outdoors, Ethan's inquisitive mind and adventurous spirit embody the essence of Nerdy Bird Farm.

The Smart Turkeys of Nerdy Bird Farm

One of the most surprising discoveries we've made over the years is just how intelligent our poultry, especially our turkeys, truly are. Raising turkeys for the past seven years has shown us that they are anything but "stupid." These birds are adept problem solvers, always curious and inquisitive about their surroundings. They observe, learn, and adapt in ways that continue to amaze us.

Problem Solvers and Inquisitive Minds

Turkeys at Nerdy Bird Farm exhibit a remarkable ability to pass down knowledge to future generations. It's common to see older turkeys teaching the younger ones the ropes, whether it's how to find the best food sources or navigate the complexities of their environment.

Equitable and Social

Interestingly, turkeys have a strong sense of equity and a defined code of conduct within their flock and with other farm animals. They are concerned with the well-being of their friends and family, maintaining harmonious relationships and ensuring everyone is taken care of.
